Kerala style Fish Pickle /Meen Achar Recipe

It gives me immense pleasure when somebody tell my dishes tastes great..because for me it is a passion ... Preparing dishes with love, for the people we love, the feeling is just amazing..

The reason for my intro is because I prepare this fish pickle/meen achar  that too in kerala style for my cousin who lives abroad. My relatives are the real fan of my dishes.. As someone tells  “the way to a someone's heart is through his/her stomach “

 I tried to prepare fish pickle/Meen Achar  with variety of Fishes. Once I tried Sardine, it was good. So this time decided to go with Tuna.

To Marinate

  • Tuna or any other fleshy fish  - 1 kg
  • Ginger & Garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Pepper Powder – 1/2  tsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1 Tsp
  • Chilly Powder – 2 Tsp
  • Salt  - a pinch
  • Vinegar – 2 tsp


Cut tuna into small square pieces. Clean it well and drain all the water.  Now for marinating,  Put fish pieces in a large bowl and add the above ingredients. Mix well and keep it aside for some time(Minimum 1 Hour) . If you lack time, keep marinated fish in freezer for some time.

To prepare fish Pickle/Meen achar


  • Oil – 1 cup
  • Ginger & Garlic paste – 3 tsp
  • Ginger – 2 inch
  • Garlic – 1 pod
  • Green Chilly  - 6
  • Pepper Powder – 2  tsp
  • Chilly Powder – 3 Tsp
  • Asafoetia powdrt – ½ tsp
  • Fenugreek – ½ tsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Curry Leaves – As needed
  • Vinegal - 1/4 Cup
  • Water Required


Pour oil in a thick bottomed pan .Fry fish until it  become crispy from outside. 
In the remaining oil, spurt mustard seeds followed by fenugreek, one it is done, add ginger garlic paste and saute well until you feel a spicy aroma.
 Add chopped ginger, garlic , green chillies and currileaves again saute well until its tenderness disapprears.  
 Add Chilly powder and pepper Powder and mix well   if it is Kashmiri chilly powder, it will give the pickle more red colour. Add fried fish into the masala and mix well. 
Saute for a minute and add vinegar and if you need more gravy accompany water with vinegar. Let it boil in low flame. Remove the flame and let it cool.


Store the Fish pickle/Meen Achar in a clean glass jar and keep it in refrigerator.

  1. This fish pickle recipe is extremely lip-smacking. I got to try one more amazing fish cuisine last week – crunchy fish finger recipe . My kids absolutely loved it. Hope fish pickle would too become a main stay in my kitchen.
